In 2022, as part of the state-wide Level Crossing Removal Project, the railway adjacent to the building was raised, with a new station constructed approximately 400m away. As the new leasees of the VicTrack owned building, Yarra Ranges Council engaged RBA to develop a feasibility study for the adaptive reuse of the site.

Throughout its history, the Lilydale railway and station has been important to the development of the town’s businesses, industries, tourism and residents. Research into the history and significance of the station led to the development of potential compatible uses, and a series of design principles.

RBA subsequently proposed three potential design options responding to Council’s needs and to the broader aspirational context of the area in the Lilydale Structure Plan. The three options provided Council with plans and images to facilitate discussions with local community groups interested in using the space. They also demonstrated to VicTrack that the building is a valuable asset, allowing them to plan for base level upgrades prior to Councils use of the building.
