The upgrade and conservation works to the four original, State-significant, Footscray Railway Station buildings was part of the broader Regional Rail Link project. The previously forlorn complex has been reinvigorated and now provides a foundation for renewed civic pride.
Various upgrade works to the original fabric were required to improve connectivity, provide more covered waiting areas, and accommodate a new track realignment. Interventions were carried out in a sympathetic manner in accordance with the Burra Charter. Internally, sections of wall were removed but original fabric was salvaged for reuse and vestiges were retained for interpretive purposes. Restrained modern fittings were introduced, discretely wherever possible.
The comprehensive program of conservation works required extensive research and physical investigations. The roofs were a major focus involving the reinstatement of original materials, including Welsh Blue slates and cast iron rainwater goods, as well as decorative items (metal cresting, lead repousse and pressed cement orbs, and lead finials). Other conservation works included in situ cleaning of the rare Martin Frères, Marseilles terracotta tiles of the signal box, re-use of original colour schemes, reinstatement of original ‘bastard’ tuck-pointing to brickwork, and repairs to clerestories and pressed metal ceilings.
