Majorca Building

RBA have prepared a draft Conservation Management Plan and Condition Assessment Report for the Majorca Building, located on the west corner of Flinders Lane and Centre Place, Melbourne.

Originally constructed as a seven-storey office building in 1928-30 and designed by architect Harry Norris, the Spanish Moorish influence in its blue faence terracotta clad façade places it firmly within the Melbourne tradition of exotic architecture in the late 1920s (the ‘jazz’ age).

Tall arched openings extend around terracotta and copper panels beneath the windows. The building has been described as an irreplaceable part of Australia’s built heritage, within a streetscape that even today retains a predominant character and scale.

The Majorca Building is recognised as a primary heritage asset within the tourist core of the city.
